The study examined 22 healthy female subjects, all of them professional athletes in training for martial arts competitions. They either took placebo or 2g (a relatively large, but not at all unsafe dose) for only one week prior to competition. The dose was split in half and taken twice a day.

Per the study:

“The results revealed significant differences between pre- and post-competition measurements of leptin, free plasma choline, urine choline and urine malondialdehyde levels; body mass was also reduced in the post-competition measurements.

In conclusion, choline supplementation could rapidly reduce body mass without any side effects on biochemical levels or static strength.”

Choline supplementation has traditionally been used before these competitions in a similar way to the water-weight reduction strategies we touched on in our boxing post several weeks ago — athletes take it to quickly drop weight prior to a weigh-in, then just as quickly put the pounds back on before the actual match. The difference here is that it’s actual fat being burned rather than just water!

Athletes certainly believe it works from anecdotal experience, but what does the science say? This study found that the athletes who took choline supplements did indeed lose body fat, at almost twice the rate of the placebo group in some cases!

While these results are exciting, we are missing one key piece of information. The study doesn’t divulge what the women’s diets were. Since they were prepping for and engaging in competition during the study, however, we can almost certainly assume they were restricting calories to their basal metabolic needs or lower.

Another number that’s important is that the study used 2g of choline daily, broken up into 1g servings before and after workouts or competition. That’s a whopping number for supplements. For perspective, the body only needs about 500mg daily to meet its basic nutritional needs.

That doesn’t mean the amount included can’t have a fat-burning effect, but to replicate this particular study you’d need to add extra choline, probably at least 1.5g per day. Choline has long been known to play a key role in transporting fats out of the liver, as deficiency is the leading cause of Fatty Liver Disease. These new study results suggest that it may also play a key role in lipolysis, as well — not just transporting consumed fats to storage, but also activating them for use as fuel!

Of course, more study is necessary to confirm that choline is an effective fat burner. But in the meantime, trying to replicate the results of this study for yourself can’t hurt and shouldn’t cost much either. Just keep in mind that the daily tolerable upper intake level as recommended by the US Institute of Medicine is 3.5g. Symptoms at this level of intake are very limited, but consumption of over 7.5g daily has been known to cause fishy body odor, nausea, sweating and possible impaired liver function.[4]
